Michigan Nature Association Accepting Entries for Nature Photo Contest

OKEMOS, Mich. – The Michigan Nature Association (MNA) has announced its annual photo contest to showcase the talent of photographers from all skill levels with photos of any of its 170 nature sanctuaries in the state, submissions accepted until August 1, 2014.

Winning photographs will be featured in MNA’s “Michigan Nature” magazine which is distributed to more than 6,000 nature lovers statewide. The Grand Prize winner will also receive a weekend stay at a cottage on Mullet Lake in Cheboygan County, Mich. Runners-up are eligible for several other prizes including theater tickets and gift cards.

For photos to be eligible, they must be taken at an MNA nature sanctuary in Michigan and belong to one of the three categories: people in nature, flora/fauna or landscapes. Photos from any season are eligible. Contestants must also fill out an entry form available for download online at http://www.michigannature.org/home/news/photocontest2014.shtml.

Photos and forms may be submitted via email to michigannature@michigannature.org or mailed on a CD to the MNA office, Attention: Photo Contest at 2310 Science Parkway, Suite 100 Okemos, MI 48864.

Silver Lake Sand Dunes Photo Takes Grand Prize in Pure Michigan Beach Challenge

LANSING – After 10 days and nearly 2,000 photos of Michigan beaches submitted to Pure Michigan through Instagram, Twitter and michigan.org, the grand prize photograph in the Pure Michigan Beach Instagram Challenge was announced today. The winning photo, submitted by Gina Ferwerda of Silver Lake, features kayakers on Lake Michigan at Silver Lake Sand Dunes.

The kayakers in the photo are Ferwerda’s daughter, Ariana, and her friends on their last day at the beach together before high school graduation.

“As I was capturing this moment, I knew how much they would treasure this photo one day thinking back to these carefree days,” Ferwerda said. “Pure Michigan to me is the best state for spectacular seasonal activities and I was happy to showcase the beauty of my hometown and the Silver Lake Sand Dunes.”

In total, 1,933 photos were submitted during the 10-day Instagram challenge. The goal of the challenge – a joint effort between Pure Michigan, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) – was to showcase the variety of beaches in Michigan, as well as the types of activities that travelers and residents can enjoy during a day at the beach.

Each of the daily challenge winners received a Personal Sun Care Kit from the Pure Michigan Store. As the grand prize winner, Ferwerda received an “Ultimate Pure Michigan Beach Day” package that will include a beach towel, a fire pit, a tackle box, a cooler and a sun care kit among other prizes.

Pure Michigan Photo Contest Invites Fans to Share Their Michigan Moments

LANSING – Pure Michigan wants to hear from fans about where they go to make memories in Michigan.  The Michigan Moments photo contest is being launched on the Pure Michigan Facebook page today, and the winning photo will be included in the 2014 spring/summer Pure Michigan Travel Guide.

“We are launching this Facebook photo contest as a way for our fans to showcase what Pure Michigan means to them, and illustrate the beauty and unique destinations found throughout the state,” said George Zimmermann, Vice President of Travel Michigan, part of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.  “We had tremendous participation in our last Michigan Moments photo contest and we are excited to hear from our fans again this year.”

Photos for the contest may be submitted directly to the Pure Michigan Facebook page via the photo contest tab, or through Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #PureMichiganContest.  All submissions will be found on a customized Facebook tab on the Pure Michigan Facebook page.  Submissions should identify the location in Michigan featured in the photo.

Photos may be submitted until midnight on Sunday, November 10, 2013.

Fans will be able to vote on the photo they believe best represents Pure Michigan during a voting period that runs from 9:00 a.m. on Monday, November 11 through midnight on Sunday, November 17, 2013.  Fans may vote for multiple entries; however only one vote per person will be allowed per entry, per day during the voting period.

The winning photo will be published in the 2014 spring/summer Pure Michigan Travel Guide. One million copies of the guide will be printed, with 650,000 copies being distributed with the March/April issue of Midwest Living magazine.

More than 3,300 photos were submitted to Pure Michigan through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram during last year’s Michigan Moments photo contest with 54,384 votes being cast in total.  Photos ranged from sweeping landscapes to family portraits and featured scenes and destinations from all across Michigan. Last year’s winning photograph, submitted by Sean Chess of Coldwater, featured the St. Joseph North Pier Lighthouse at sunset.
