Crash Davis Goes Country! 11/19/2008

You heard them here on WFXD first… Kevin Costner and his band Modern West!

Prior to achieving major success as a film actor, director and producer, Kevin Costner met John Coinman some 20 years ago in a dirty warehouse in downtown Los Angeles during an acting workshop.

In 2005, they decided to build a band together. With the additions of Blair Forward,  Teddy Morgan and Larry Cobb, they named the band Modern West.

Kevin Costner and Modern West’s debut album, Untold Truths, was released Nov. 11, 2008, by Universal Republic/Universal Records South.

* TAYLOR SWIFT wasn’t the most popular in high school, and she says she still isn’t!

Start A Band! 11/18/2008

Less than a week after Brad Paisley won a CMA Award for his last video, he debuts his newest today on GAC, and guess what? WE GOT IT HERE!

Brad and Keith Urban collaborated on “Start A Band,” which has a PlayStation air about it: Two kids who look a bit like Keith and Brad in their younger days pit the guitar-slingers against each other.

“It’s [set] in an arcade with a bunch of kids playing Guitar Hero to us, with us on the screens, and they’re having this duel,” Brad said after finishing his CMA hosting duties last week. “It’s to sort of make the point of a new generation [getting] into [playing] a little better — and not just Guitar Hero, but pick up the real thing eventually, too. Chicks dig real guitar from what I can tell.”

Jim Shea, who has a long history with Brad, directed the video, which was just finished early last week. Jim shared in Brad’s CMA victory last week for “Waitin’ On A Woman,” which was actually the second CMA award of Jim’s career. He also got a Video win in 1992 for directing Alan Jackson’s “Midnight In Montgomery.” Among the other Brad Paisley videos that Jim has overseen are “When I Get Where I’m Going,” “Alcohol,” “Online” and “Letter To Me.”

Today’s Deep Thoughts:

* WELCOME BACK WALT 🙂

11-18-08: Opening Weekend Pics and Stories

Jeremy Whitmire from Calumet sent us this pic of the buck he got on opening day:

“I am sending a photo of my 9 pt buck shot at 11:05 opening morning. He was chasing a doe along with another smaller buck (4 pt) along the shore of an inland lake in Eagle Harbor Township. My buck came up from behind the four pointer and flipped him into the water with his antlers then I shot the nine point as the doe was leading him back into the woods. About 130 yard neck shot.”

Another report and picture, this one from Darcy Burton:

“OK, so maybe this new combo license isn’t so bad. I’m really glad I didn’t
just buy a single license. I shot this six point in northern Schoolcraft
county Sunday evening, and I’m certainly not ready to be done hunting! I
also saw two smaller bucks before this one showed up. I know the deer
numbers are supposed to be down this year. I’ve not seen quite as many
deer, but more bucks. I’ll take that! :)”

Jewel is a Jewel! 11/17/2008

JEWEL leads this year’s A Kiss For Country campaign to kiss domestic violence goodbye in conjunction with Mary Kay cosmetics and the Country Music Association. Country stars, including GEORGE STRAIT and TAYLOR SWIFT, have put their kiss print and autograph on cards that are currently on the auction block.

The proceeds from that auction will go to women’s shelters around the country, and Jewel tells us, quote, “These shelters are so important because it can help women change their name, change their identity, and really help hide them and get them on their feet [after escaping domestic violence.]” The cards are now on the auction block at UBid.com.

Deer Season! 11/14/2008

It’s here! Whoopie! 740,000 hunters will take to Michigan’s woods, fields and meadows Saturday through Nov. 30. Combined with other deer seasons, including bow and youth hunts, they’re expected to kill nearly half a million deer out of the state’s herd of 1.85 million. Will you be one of them? All I know is that one of those MUST have Ducks name on it!

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources sold just over 1.1 million deer licenses through Tuesday, up two percent over last year for the same time period. The increase likely is due to this year’s early doe season in southern Michigan, said Mary Dettloff, DNR spokeswoman.

Today’s Deep Thoughts:

* Check out the opening day forecast here!

* Don’t forget about the deer hunting regulation changes.

* What to say to an anti-hunter!
