Marquette, MI – Northern Michigan University’s DeVos Art Museum will present an exhibit that explores the ancient art form of cornhusk dolls to preserve traditional culture and history. “Elizabeth Doxtater: Art of Peace” will be on display Sept. 26-Dec. 9. An opening reception and artist talk is scheduled at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26. Admission is free.
Doxtater is a Six Nations (Mohawk) artist. She was inspired to create this work after viewing iconic western paintings such as Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper and Mona Lisa. She began to wonder how she could visually represent and celebrate her own cultural history, which has been based on oral traditions. Doxtater invites viewers to consider their role in creating peace in the world.
The exhibit features more than 100 corn husk dolls in two displays: Peacemaker’s Journey and the First Council Fire (Encircles Everything). It is presented in collaboration with the Center for Native American Studies.
Museum hours are: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Wednesday and Friday; noon to 8 p.m. Thursday; and 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Music, dancing and fireflies floating in the sawgrass. You’ve got a caller and a band and folks having fun under the moonlight. With lyrics rooted in scenes of the deep south, think lights strung up around an outdoor patio in the heart of a town where they still love to square dance, it’s what ties them together. You’ll find yourself wanting to take a turn into A Love Like This!
Few powerhouse talents are capable of taking a vision from inception all the way through to product and Kally O’Mally is one of them. O’Mally hails from a Kentucky lineage that has generations of musical roots, “I was enthralled by the music of my youth and far more interested in the stereo than the television. My parents had a classic country and Southern Rock record collection that consisted of Loretta Lynn, Waylon Jennings, Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Anne Murray, Barbara Mandrell and others.” That love of music laid the foundation of what’s clearly a longtime pursuit towards mastery and a willingness to push her own limits to bring her music to fruition.
O’Mally grew up in South Florida which helped cultivate her deep love of world musics and Latin rhythms. “South Florida is steeped in an incredible variety of world sounds, rich horn sections and energetic percussive beats; congas, bongos, steel drums, you name it. Anything to get people grooving and dancing and having a good time. When I’ve accomplished that, I’m happy.” O’Mally has a particular knack for combining styles and can move from writing a classic traditional sounding song like, Bourbon on my Deathbed to the more raucous and tongue in cheek, Wild West Medicine Show. An admitted computer geek with a competitive side, she was inspired to jump into sound engineering so she could fully execute her musical vision. Being a multi-instrumentalist makes it even easier for her. O’Mally is at home and comfortable playing guitar, keyboard, bass, ukulele and a whole host of percussion instruments.
O’Mally currently resides in Northern, California (Sacramento), where she performs live throughout the region.
