Family-Friendly Activities Across Michigan for the Next Two Weeks

Get Fresh Air fit

Fresh Air Fit logo

We’re teaming up with fitness instructors statewide to put the “out” back into workout! Pilates on the beach, yoga in the woods, and sunrise Tai Chi are just a few of the group fitness programs available through the Fresh Air Fit campaign. Come on out and enjoy the outdoors while getting in shape!

New programs are added regularly, so check www.michigan.gov/freshfit often for a list of fitness classes in state parks.

A handful of programs over the next two weeks include:

Learn to fish with the DNR

If you’d like to learn how to fish but aren’t quite sure where to start, start right here, at a Hook, Line and Sinker event. We’ll show you how to get the gear ready, how to cast, and how to safely remove the hook from the fish. We’ll even provide the equipment and the bait!

Check the beach conditions

Summer is here! It’s time to take a break and put your toes in the sand! Before you go, check the beach conditions with Great Lakes Beachcast! You can use it to check the weather at your favorite beach, and find out about closings and advisories.

If you’ve got an Android phone, download the MyBeachCast mobile app and discover local Great Lakes beaches based on your location, save favorite beaches, and of course view real-time information on beach water quality advisories, weather and water conditions.

Celebrate Independence Day

Have you made plans yet for Independence Day? Why not head to a state park? You won’t be disappointed! We’ve got bike parades, fireworks, treats, prizes and games for the whole family! Each park offers something a little different, so be sure to click on the links below for details.

Take a kayaking class, especially for moms and daughters

Women kayaking

Moms and daughters–set aside a day to spend quality time together in the outdoors; go for a hike, learn (or fine-tune!) your kayaking skills and enjoy a tasty on-site cookout at Tourist Park in Marquette on July 13.

This event is part of the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) program, a non-competitive program in which each individual is encouraged to learn at her own pace, with emphasis on enjoyment, fun and camaraderie of outdoor activities and in sharing in the success of one another. Learn more about BOW programs at www.michigan.gov/bow.

Registration is required for this event and space is limited, so sign up early!
