Michigan’s tourism industry ended the summer with a bang, according to the latest hotel data from Smith Travel Research. The industry set records for hotel occupancy, average daily rate (ADR) and revenue per available room (RevPAR) for June, July and August, with the one exception being June’s occupancy rate which was slightly below June of 2012. Year to date through August, Michigan’s hotel occupancy rate was 58.8%, up 1.6% over the same period last year. The average daily rate (ADR) for Michigan hotels through August was $88.10, up 4.6% from 2012. And revenue per available room (RevPAR) through August was $51.82, up 6.2% from the first eight months of 2012.
Michigan Cares for Tourism is looking for tourism industry volunteers to help implement their first historic site clean-up event October 6-7 at the Mill Lake Outdoor Center in Chelsea’s Waterloo Recreation Area. Visit www.michigancaresfortourism.org for event information or to register. Michigan Cares for Tourism was the winner of the Jump Start competition at this year’s Pure Michigan Governor’s Conference on Tourism, and this is a terrific opportunity to share your time, talent and resources to give back and enhance the travel experience here in Michigan.
Finally, to recognize October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month we – along with all state agencies – will be going pink on our social media sites. As part of that effort, we would like to invite you to send us a short list of events happening in your communities in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A portion of these events will be included in a blog post on Pure Michigan Connect. Because we won’t have space for every event we will also send our fans to the comprehensive Michigan event calendar on the American Cancer Society website. Events can be sent to Chad Wiebesick at firstname.lastname@example.org.
