Redfella’s Pick of the Day…

When Doves Cry” is a song by the American musician Prince, and the lead single from his 1984 album Purple Rain. It was a worldwide hit, and his first American number one single, topping charts for five weeks. According to Billboard magazine, it was the top-selling single of the year.

The song follows the general spiritual theme of Christianity throughout Purple Rain. Many have interpreted the ‘dove’ as being a symbol of the Holy Spirit. The song has also been understood as Prince’s cry to God: “how could you just leave me standing alone in a world that’s so cold?” One can also interpret Prince’s denial of both parents as a criticism of the 5th (or 4th, depending on faith) commandment of honoring thy father and mother, further solidifying his call for God to intervene.

On 10/13/2008, the song was voted #2 on Australian VH1’s Top 10 Number One Pop Songs countdown.

Goodbye, Billy

billy1LYNYRD SKYNYRD’s keyboard player BILLY POWELL died at his home in Orange Park, Florida early Wednesday morning at age 56. He’d called 911 around 12:55 AM saying he was having trouble breathing. Rescue crews arrived at his home and pronounced him dead about an hour after the 911 call.

In addition to classic songs such as “Freebird” and “Sweet Home Alabama,” Powell also played piano on KID ROCK’s latest hit “All Summer Long.” MONTGOMERY GENTRY shared the stage with Lynyrd Skynyrd for a CMT Crossroads special a few years ago, and TROY GENTRY has fond memories of working with Powell. Troy says, quote, “It’s a sad day for anybody that grew up on Southern Rock…Billy Powell’s one of the big names…He will definitely be missed.”

THE LOST TRAILERS played a few shows with Skynyrd over the years including one festival date in Huntsville, Alabama. STOKES NIELSON tells us that Powell let Trailers’ lead singer RYDER LEE sit beside him during the set to fully experience the show. Stokes says, quote, “That guy’s an absolute rock ‘n roll legend, and one of the sweetest guys in the business. What a nice guy.”

Coming to a “Little Big Town” near you?

LITTLE BIG TOWN’s A Place to Land tour got off to a great start last weekend, even though the band members are well aware they’re starting their first headlining trek in the middle of a recession. KAREN FAIRCHILD says, quote, “We always have been a brave band, haven’t we?”

One of the perks of having their own tour is being on stage for more than two hours. Karen says, quote, “It’s great to be able to sing all those songs the fans have been telling us they want to hear.” Little Big Town’s tour pulls into Montgomery, Alabama this Thursday with shows lined up for Atlanta and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to follow.

Looks like we will get a shot at seeing them in Green Bay, on March 8th at the Meyer Theatre.
