The Northern Flights Air Show Committee along with the Delta County Airport and the Delta County Airport Advisory Board have announced today that they will cancel the “Thunder Over Delta County” Air Show scheduled for Friday, July 26th, Saturday, 27th and Sunday, 28th, 2013.
With the March 1st sequestration budget cuts implemented, all four military organizations have announced that all air shows and all support to public events will be canceled for the 2013 season. The Department of Defense has directed the Air Force and all services to cancel aviation support to public events for the remainder of the fiscal year which ends September 30, 2013. This includes the cancellation of support to all air shows, tradeshows and flyovers (including funerals and military graduations). Additionally, the Air Force will cancel the Thunderbirds’ entire 2013 season beginning April 1, 2013. The US Navy Blue Angels have also canceled the remainder of their schedule, beginning April 1, 2013.
For Delta County, this air show was going to be the 1st in over 20 years. “We are disappointed that we need to cancel the air show, but at the same time, believe that we now have more time to make 2014’s air show bigger and better than originally planned, stated Kelly Smith, Delta County Airport air show committee member.
Mike McNeil, committee chairman for Northern Flights Air Show said, “The public support given by the military forces is a very big draw for spectators and although Dacy Airshows, our acrobatic entertainment were still planning on performing, the fly-ins, static displays and photo opportunities of A-10’s, F-15’s, C130’s and others would have been more than 50% of the reasons why the public comes to air shows to begin with”.
“Thunder Over Delta County” is scheduled for Saturday, July 26th and Sunday, July 27th of 2014. Dave Dacy AirShow Team has already confirmed their involvement and will be our main performing team, as well as Scott Murray and The Sick Air Team. Other events being planned will be Meet the Teams Night for sponsors, possible public rides, a Saturday evening music and dance, vendor opportunities, children’s play area and much more.
The Northern Flights Air Show committee would like to thank those sponsors who have already committed to the 2013 dates and we look forward to their continued commitment for 2014. The Committee will continue marketing and sponsorship solicitation. Any and all tickets that were already purchased will be given a full refund.
