The Khaleej Times, Abu Dhabi: ”Laurel is a virtuoso in various forms of art, being a Jazz singer, a Song writer, Saxophonist, an Artist and an Art curator. She says art takes her into a different state of peaceful consciousness — a private, creative place where anything is possible.”
. New Jersey Jazz Society Magazine says
THIS “GIRL FROM IPANEMA” is a one-woman band. These days, Laurel Moore sings and plays, arranges and composes gentle jazz in Qatar, in the Persian Gulf. Her voice evokes the innocence of Astrud Gilberto, and her tenor sax is breathy and light, like her idol’s, Stan Getz. She backs her multi-track recorded songs on piano and saxophone, adding a Canadian guitarist and sounds of nature as needed. Brought up near the south coast of England and classically trained, Moore, has given up reading music for improvisation. Meaning she never plays a tune the same way twice. She added the distant sounds of ocean waves and seagulls to her mixed recording of “Ipanema.” Living far away from world music centers, she tells me, “I do tend to exist in a ‘jazz bubble.’” But her music gets out and around; you can sample four tracks from a planned first album and purchase them singly as 320 kbps quality music files from her website. You can also watch her perform live on YouTube at a televised concert for TEDxAbuDhabi. Laurel Moore’s music hath charms, but so does her painting.”
Described as a ‘virtuoso’ in recent publications, Laurel Moore as OneLadyJazz captivates with her Smooth Jazz Vocals and mellow Tenor Saxophone, that is both stunningly rich and strikingly soulful……..
Super-talented Laurel Moore as OneLadyJazz was classically trained on the piano from the age of 7. Passionate about Music and Art from an early age Laurel was always captivated by painting and singing. As a student she could often be found busking on the streets of England where she was talent-scouted by a hotel manager who invited her to perform regular gigs in his hotels.
Now a singer/song-writer and Tenor Saxophone player she became finalist in ‘UAE’s Got Talent’ in January 2012. Her cover song ‘The Nearness Of You’ went straight to number One online in the charts of 42,000 songs worldwide.
Over the years, as jobs took her family further afield: from England, to Switzerland, then to Abu Dhabi and now to Qatar in the Middle East, Laurel found it more and more difficult to find the right musicians. Her adventures led her perform at the first ever TEDX Abu Dhabi and to start her worldwide popular blog.moorethanart.com – where she began sharing her painting and music adventures. Now in its 6th year, blog hits sometimes reach over 9000 a month.
One of the many hats Laurel wears is as a highly-skilled traditional Fine Artist – Laurel exhibits and curates her Fine Art in galleries and venues worldwide. As a highly sought-after portrait artist she often takes on private commissions.
Moving to these sometimes solitary destinations, allowed Laurel the introspection to dedicate herself to The Arts, both as an oil painter and as a musician and singer/song-writer. So her band-name ‘OneLadyJazz’ was a somewhat ironic choice.
2013 is the first year Laurel has ever released her music ‘into the wild’. These new singles see Laurel performing covers of great jazz songs: sometimes singing vocals, playing piano, or her vintage tenor saxophone – or duetting with stunning Canadian (finger-style) guitarist and song-writer Steve Parisien.
After discovering that reading sheet-music seemed to distance herself from the emotion of a song, in recent years she developed a style of ‘singing’ with her sax, by using improvisation only. This lends a lyrical style to her playing. So that every time she plays a song, she plays it differently.
Her music is soulful and captivating and is already causing a ‘buzz’ in Jazz Publications. In her music you will find many layers and depths of sound. She hopes to immerse the listener totally in the emotion of the song. Most of all Laurel hopes you enjoy listening.
