News From Travel Michigan’s Director, George Zimmermann

In his proposed FY ’14 state budget, Governor Rick Snyder has recommended a $4 million increase for Pure Michigan tourism promotion – from $25 million to $29 million – starting October 1. This funding, if approved by the legislature, would support an increase in our international marketing program.

Currently we spend about $600,000 in Southern Ontario and $200,000 in partnership with the other Great Lakes states in the UK and Germany. With this additional funding, we will be able to enter the Toronto market for the first time, beef up our promotion in Europe, and open new markets in Asia, most likely Japan, China and/or South Korea. This proposal and the rest of the state budget now moves to the legislature.

Also, a reminder that the Michigan Travel Commission meets this Friday, February 15th, from 8:00 am to 11:00 am, at the Bavarian Inn, in Frankenmuth. Among agenda items is the formal adoption of the Michigan Tourism Strategic Plan. Industry attendance and participation at Travel Commission meetings is encouraged.
